WHO:             Comptroller Peter Franchot

State and local elected officials

WHAT:          Comptroller Peter Franchot will present a Proclamation to the University of Maryland Police Department and a Maryland Hero Medallion to Chief David Mitchell, honoring the department’s and the chief’s commitment to protect and serve the College Park community. More than 100 men and women serve with the department.

In his role as a member of the Board of Public Works, the Comptroller will tour the Landover Hills Veterans Memorial at Henry Rinck Park with Landover Hills Mayor Lee Walker. In November 2013, the memorial received $50,000 in funding through the Maryland  Department of Natural Resources’ Program Open Space and Community Parks and Playgrounds program for landscaping, park benches, picnic tables and energy efficient lighting. The new brick memorial replaces a 1946 wooden  one which bore the names of 100 World War II veterans. Those names have been transferred to a new metal plaque on the memorial.
