Franchot to Visit Higher Education Center, Market and Museum in Southern Maryland
WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will tour the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center (SMHEC) Thursday morning. SMHEC was established in 1994 in response to the expanded role of Naval Air Systems and Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station to provide on-site and complete access to quality graduate education degree programs. It also provides professional development opportunities in support of the local workforce.
The Comptroller then will visit Chaptico Market and Deli to present a proclamation to Ronald Tennyson and his family, who have owned and operated the business for more than 50 years. James and Virginia Tennyson ran the store until their son, Ronald, and his wife, Gwendolyn, recently took over the business. A general store for the community, Chaptico Market also is known for its homemade fried chicken, stuffed ham and ice cream.
The Comptroller’s final stop will be at St. Clement’s Island Museum to attend the 2016 Maryland Day Celebration. English colonists first landed in Maryland at St. Clement’s Island in 1634. Maryland Day celebrates the founding of Maryland with guest speakers, dignitaries and a wreath-laying ceremony.
