The first Black astronaut to walk in space July 12 lead an exhibition of what 50 middle school students helped produce in a tough math and science camp at Bowie State University.

Under the guidance of Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr., the campers created spacesuit coatings that would endure the harsh environment of space but consisting of only household items.

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at Bowie State, founded by former astronaut Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr., is one of 20 camps being held on university campuses nationwide to immerse campers in hands-on, team-based learning activities designed to reveal the science behind the latest technology, increase environmental awareness and explore how math impacts daily life.
