Mildred Hayes Blackwell was born to the late Annie Hayes Dade and James Dade on June 26, 1919 in Richmond, Va.

At age 5, she and her family moved to Baltimore, Md., where Mildred continued her education in the Baltimore schools, graduating from Frederick Douglass High School and continuing her education at Cortez Peters Business School in Baltimore.

At an early age, she joined Shiloh Baptist Church and became an active member. As a young woman, Mildred became a member of Canaan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., under the pastorate of Cecil B. Mills. There she served on the finance committee and the Pastor’s Vacation Club. Mildred was a charter member of the Shiloh Baptist Club of Washington, D.C. and served as treasurer until 1975. She was also a member of Club 9.

She was married of Harry C. Robinson and of this union two daughters were born, Shirley and Barbara Robinson. Later, she met and married Alexander Blackwell – a marriage that was blessed for 63 years. The couple moved to Washington, D.C. where they lived until retirement. When they retired, Mildred and Alexander moved to Ophelia, Va., where they have spent 36 golden years.

Mildred was employed at the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of Education and Howard University in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1975 after 30 years of work service.

In 1975, she joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Burgess, Va. under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. T.W. Morris. Mildred became an active member of the Missionary Circle, Willing Workers, and the mid-week meals ministry delivering meals to the sick and shut-in members of the community, the Hannah Mission Ministry, the Jolly Friends Club and the Community Combined Choir.

In Northumberland, Mildred became associated with two wonderful groups: the Northumberland Homemakers and the Nubian Red Hatters.

Memories of Mildred will be cherished and experiences of her will be mentioned for many years. She is now the angel who will await to greet and meet her loving family: faithful husband, Alexander; daughter, Mary Alease Carter; son-in-law, Jean-Marie; grandson, Keith; daughter-in-law, Sophia; great-grandson, Darius; great-grandaughters, Kallen and Summer and special grandson, Dale.
