The Morgan State Bears scored for the first time in four games played this season, but not enough to avoid a 49-17 home loss to the visiting North Carolina A&T Aggies on Sept. 23 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore, Md.

Morgan State dropped to 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

The Bears hadn’t scored a single point during their first three games of the season. They lost, 10-0, to Towson on Sept. 2, 26-0 to Albany on Sept. 9 and 65-0 to Rutgers on Sept. 16. They started out scoreless against N.C. A&T, too, falling behind, 35-0, at halftime.

But Morgan State finally found pay dirt in the second half as transfer quarterback Eli Staley launched a 83-yard pass to junior receiver Brian Gentry, who ran in for the score.  The Bears scored 10 more points in the fourth quarter on a field goal and a defensive fumble recovered and returned for a touchdown.

Staley finished a season-high 303 yards passing, though he also threw three interceptions.

North Carolina A&T improved to 4-0, its best start to a season since 1993.

Next – Morgan State will break next weekend before taking on South Carolina State on Oct. 6 in Orangeburg, S.C.
