Morgan State University’s Modern Dance Ensemble put on a phenomenal show April 28 at its 35th Annual Spring Concert, under the direction of Dr. Lantha Tucker.
Tucker started this dance ensemble 35 years ago and has brought many young men and ladies together through dance over the years. She has done a fantastic job at putting together these performances with outstanding dancers as such. “The best part about being the director is seeing all of your time and hard work on stage,” says Tucker.
The dance ensemble brought out a large crowd of many different ages, shapes, colors, and sizes all in support of these dancers as well as Dr. Tucker. The theater was filled with anticipation of what was in store for the evening. Tucker and the dancers put together a show of 11 pieces, each telling a story behind every movement. They graced the stage with poise, synchronization, and passion, sending emotion to each person in the crowd. There were pieces that entertained, while there were pieces that touched the hearts of the audience. Some of these performances were so uplifting that some of those persons in the crowd would applaud even before the performance was over, or even shout words of encouragement as they performed. Dancers must feel the emotion behind the movement in order to move the crowd, and they have mastered that. One particular performance, Inspiration, drove the crowd wild, prompting standing ovations, whistles and shouts during the first half of the show.
Soloist, Stephanie Crockett showed so much feeling in her performance that the audience was equally moved. At the end of the show the audience found this was Crockett’s last year with the ensemble because she is going away to college. She was honored by Tucker who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the amazing talent since Crockett’s freshmen year of high school.
Tucker was honored at the end of the show Tucker by University President David Wilson, who presented her with her awards from Gov. Martin O’ Malley.
