Business owner Adrienne Holmes has decided to have her cake and eat it, too. The self-taught baker recently opened her own storefront on Gorman Avenue in D.C.-Baltimore midpoint, Laurel. Her timing is impeccable, with the nation currently in a “cake craze” heightened by popular shows like “Cake Boss,” “D.C. Cupcake” and “Ace of Cakes.”
But Holmes said D.C. and Baltimore-area residents with a sweet tooth can avoid the hubbub of city businesses by visiting her shop in the quiet Prince George’s County section of town.
“This time, they can wait on the streets of Laurel for decadent, icing-topped cupcakes,” said Holmes in a press release. “Why should D.C. be the only place where folks can get a decadent cupcake? Laurel is deserving of a cupcake bakery, and here we are. This community is in for a sweet treat.”

Cakes by Adrienne’s grand opening less than a month ago. The opening also featured hourly giveaways, samples, discount orders, a raffle and activities for kids.
“Cakes by Adrienne is definitely a family-friendly place,” said Holmes , who runs the business with her husband Maurice and is mom to a toddler. “We are excited about offering fun events for area youth and fresh ingredients to our neighbors and surrounding businesses.”
Cakes by Adrienne uses the freshest ingredients to create their cupcakes, including Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans, Valrhona chocolates and European butter. Their silky smooth butter cream or cream cheese frosting puts the icing on the cake including flavors like red velvet, vanilla, strawberries and cream, and Neapolitan.
In addition to cupcakes, the bakery offers special occasion and custom cakes in the shapes of cartoon characters, books, handbags, people and novelty items to name a few. Holmes also crafts traditional cakes for weddings and holidays and is planning community cake decorating classes.
