LA Fitness held a grand opening in Upper Marlboro Jan. 25, cutting the ceremonial ribbon for a new Prince George’s County outpost of the national chain of workout centers.

“We are extremely happy to have LA Fitness in Prince George’s County and especially in District 6,” County Council member Derrick L. Davis (District 6) told the early morning crowd of LA Fitness members at Upper Marlboro.

“Let’s remind folks that if we are going to be a healthy Prince George’s County, we have to eat healthy, we have to workout together and we have to raise our families to understand the importance of that.”

Even though the latest addition to the LA Fitness facilities in the county has been open since November, the event marked the official opening of the personal training, racquetball, basketball, indoor pool, spa, sauna and fitness classrooms in what was once a grocery store.

LA Fitness staff members conducted tours of the redesigned building, gave complimentary workouts and healthy snacks and even offered free face-painting for children in launching one more upscale facility for Prince George’s residents.

“This is about bringing in amenities that this county deserves. The best is yet to come folks. We’re doing big things in the county in terms of creating economic opportunities that we need right here locally,” County Council Chairman Mel Franklin told the crowd.

For LA Fitness General Manager Kenneth Godrey Jr. the fitness center is a calling, not just a job.

“My passion is health, fitness and nutrition. I took a negative and turned it into a positive, and I’m doing everything I can to help as many people as possible,” Godrey said. “I lost my father two years ago to diabetes. I lost 32 pounds myself and helped my mother lose 48 pounds and beat diabetes. It’s a yearning passion for me just to see us in the African American community doing what we do, and making sure our children don’t go down the same path.”
