Former Baltimore Colt and NFL Hall of Famer Art Donovan, died Aug. 4 at the Stella Maris Hospice in Baltimore from a respiratory disease. He was 88.
Donovan played as a defensive tackle in the NFL for 12 seasons, 10 with the Baltimore Colts. During his career, Donovan was selected to five Pro Bowls, was selected as an All-Pro four times, and won two NFL championships. His no. 70 jersey was retired by the Colts, and he entered the Hall of Fame in 1968.
After his football career, Donovan became an icon in Baltimore and beyond. He published an autobiography entitled “Fatso” in 1987, owned and managed the Valley Country Club outside Baltimore, and appeared on the “Late Show with David Letterman” several times.
Donovan also made guest appearances on the Nickelodeon show “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” and appeared in the WWF as a guest commentator for 1994’s “King of the Ring” event. Donovan also worked as a pitchman for the Maryland State Lottery and ESPN.
