The Norfolk State Spartans improved to 16-6 overall and maintained their first place standing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after cruising to a 75-59 victory Jan. 28 against Morgan State University at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.

Spartans senior center Kyle O’Quinn led all scorers with 18 points along with 12 rebounds in the double-digit win. O’Quinn’s dominance helped Norfolk State spark a 25-4 scoring run early in the first half, giving the team a comfortable lead they wouldn’t give up.

Meanwhile, Morgan State struggled offensively, shooting just 23 percent from the field in the first half. Senior forward Kevin Thompson ended the game as MSU’s leading scorer with only 13 points along with 12 rebounds. Bears junior forward DeWayne Jackson had only six points; he ripped the Spartans for 33 points when the two teams faced each other earlier in the season.

With the win, Norfolk State advanced to a perfect 8-0 record against the MEAC while Morgan State dropped to 5-13 overall, 3-4 against the MEAC. Morgan State will face Hampton University in Hampton, Va. Jan. 30.
