Thereโ€™s a sobering inequity at the heart of organ donation in America: A federal report released earlier this year revealed that in 2024, Black Americans made up more than a quarter of the national transplant list, yet they are far less likely to receive the kidneys, livers, hearts and other organs they need to survive. It also found that Black folks accounted for just 13 percent of organ donors.

Word In Blackโ€™s research division wants to know why. The organization, which is made up of the leading Black newspapers in the countryโ€“ including theAFROโ€“ has now launched a short survey to better understand the barriers to donation. Whether the root cause is due to mistrust, misinformation or access โ€” Word in Black wants to hear directly from readers.

โ€œโ€œThere are so many in our communities โ€” church members, neighbors, family and friends โ€” who have waited and prayed for a transplant that never came. That heartbreak is far too common, but together we can change it,โ€ said AFRO Publisher and CEO, Dr. Frances Murphy Draper. โ€œBy completing this survey, you add your voice to the fight to remove barriers, build trust, and save lives. Every response matters โ€” because every life matters.โ€

Your voice matters

Responses to the survey will help fill a crucial gap in our national understanding and make sure every Black voice counts. Together we can:

  • Elevate awareness and influence how organ-donation campaigns are designed
  • Inform policy changes to improve access, outreach, and trust
  • Spark community conversations that can ultimately save lives

As a thank you, those who complete the survey will also be entered into a drawing to win one of twenty $100 prizes.

Your views and experiences matter. Please join us in this meaningful work.
