The members and friends of Canaan Baptist Church will celebrate the first anniversary of their pastor, the Rev. Dr. Larry Owens Jr., during the 10 a.m. worship service on May 30 at the church located at 1607 Monroe St. N.W.

The guest preacher will be the Rev. Duane T. Fields, pastor of Oxford Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, Va.

Owens is a native of the Richmond, Va., area and earned an associate’s degree in mortuary science from John Tyler Community College, a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, a master’s of divinity at Virginia Union University and a doctorate in church conflict resolution. During this time, he has also served as an adjunct professor at the John Tyler Community College.

Owens, a man of God, is a great preacher and teacher. During the Sunday services, he often reminds his congregation to “open their Bible and read it and keep it open,” otherwise the preacher could tell you anything.

“We at Canaan are truly blessed to be experiencing spiritual growth,” a member said. “Through his vision, preaching and teaching, Reverend Owens has increased our membership. God is using him in a mighty way to take Canaan to a higher level in his name.”

Owens is married to the former LaWanda Brown and they are the parents of Renata Grace Owens, 5. The public is invited to attend this celebration. Call the church office at 202-234-5330 or visit online at canaanbapt.com for additional information.
