NFL veteran player Hines Ward was arrested on July 9 for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to reports.

The Associated Press reports that the 35-year-old Pittsburgh Steelers receiver was processed into the DeKalb County jail in Decatur, Ga., just outside of Atlanta, at 3:41 a.m. and charged with a DUI. According to the AP, Ward was eventually released on a $1,300 bond; the Decatur Sheriff’s office told AP they couldn’t release any more information about Ward’s arrest after turning his paperwork over to the DeKalb County court.

Atlanta based attorney Andrew Ree issued a statement to the AP on Ward’s behalf.

“From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was NOT impaired by alcohol while driving,” stated Ree, also claiming that Ward fully cooperated with police and answered all of their questions honestly. “However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction.”

Ward, a 13-year veteran, has played every single game of his NFL career with the Steelers, helping them win two Super Bowls in 2006 and 2009. One of the most respected players in the league, Hines‚ resumes also includes four Pro Bowl selections, three 2nd Team All-Pro selections, and a Super Bowl MVP award. He’s also the Steelers‚ all-time leader in receptions (954), receiving yards (11,702), and receiving touchdowns (83).

Ward recently gained additional notoriety in May when he won the “Dancing With the Stars” competition with his professional dancing partner Kym Johnson.
