The Patterson Clippers put on a high-scoring affair for the second straight week, but this time fell to the Poly Western Engineers, 44-34, on Oct. 7 at Poly in West Baltimore.

Patterson fought back from an early 16-0 deficit in the first quarter, and exchanged leads with Poly four times before running out of steam late in what became their second loss of the season.

Poly scored the first points of the game on a 65-yard punt return by senior running back Jamal Chappell. The Engineers made it 16-0 after a 50-yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Derrell Milburn to Jonathan Riley.

But Patterson would answer with a long touchdown pass by senior quarterback Craig Oliver to senior receiver Nyme Manns, cutting into Poly’s lead, 16-8, at halftime.  Patterson then caught Poly off guard with a successful onside kick to open the second half, and immediately scored after a 40-yard run by running back Derwin Beasley, shortening Poly’s lead to 16-14 after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

The Clippers took their first lead of the game on the ensuing drive as senior defensive back Shakir Brown intercepted a Poly pass and returned it 40 yards for a defensive touchdown to make the score 22-16. But Poly quickly retook the lead, 24-22, on a long drive capped off with a short touchdown run by senior running back Brandon Owens.

Patterson recaptured the lead one last time on the next drive, thanks to a 60-yard touchdown bomb caught by Manns near the end of the third quarter to push them ahead, 28-24. But the lead didn’t last long once again, as Poly’s Chappell rushed for a short touchdown, giving Poly a 30-28 lead with seven minutes left in the game. Chappell would score two more touchdowns before the game ended, giving the Engineers the comfortable lead.

Poly is a perfect 6-0 overall this season, and 5-0 against Baltimore City Division I competition, while Patterson dropped to 4-2 overall, and 3-2 against City teams. Poly will take on Southwestern Academy (2-3) on Oct. 14, while Patterson faces Mergenthaler Vo-Tech (3-3) the same day.
