There will be several events in the area this weekend to celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend:

Jan. 14 at 2p.m. —Rep. Donna Edwards (D) will be the keynote speaker at the City of College Park’s 21st Annual Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., at the Kay Theater inside the Clarice Smith Center on the campus of the University of Maryland. College Park Mayor Andy Fellows will join her in addition to city council members.

Jan. 16– the Prince George’s County Chapter of the American Red Cross along with the Fire/EMS Department is asking for volunteers to participate in the National Day of Service at the Town of Berwyn Heights Municipal Center. Volunteers will provide information on emergency preparedness throughout the Berwyn Heights Community.

• Jan. 16 from 2 p.m. To 4 p.m.–in Capitol Heights, there will be a march from to commemorate King’s life. The purpose of the march is to promote public safety, service and support to the county’s neighborhoods. The march will start from Capitol Heights Town Hall on Capitol Heights Blvd and end at the Capitol Heights Fire/EMS Station on Old Central Ave.

Perhaps the most important celebration of MLK’s life will take place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall. At 8 a.m. on Jan. 16, Rev. Al Sharpton, Robert G. Stanton, senior advisor to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Harry E. Johnson, will speak at a ceremony celebrating King’s first birthday since the memorial’s opening.
