The UDC Lady Firebirds women’s basketball team has won 9 of its last 10 games and is currently on its third three-game winning streak of the season after a big win over the Central State University Marauders on Jan. 9.
UDC (10-6) used its impressive defense and three-point shooting to take out CSU, 67-54, in the New Years Classic tournament in Washington, D.C.
The Lady Firebirds shot 41.2 percent (seven of 17) from beyond the three-point line, surprising considering UDC averages only 27.8 percent shooting from long distance this season.
But it was just that kind of a offensive day for the Lady Firebirds, led by freshman guard Julissa Anderson who finished with 14 points, making four of seven shots from beyond the arc.
Graduate student Niqky Hughes added 12 points, shooting 50 percent from three-point range. Senior forward Lillian McGill led the team with her usual double-double of 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She also had a game-high 14 rebounds, and was named the New Years Classic tournament MVP. McGill also recorded a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds in the first game of the tournament as UDC edged King College, 66-62, on Jan. 8.
UDC will hit the road this weekend to take on Philadelphia University on Jan. 16.
