The Washington Redskins’ regular season campaign starts in just a week, but the team plans on doing more than just entertaining fans with exciting football on Sundays. In an attempt to boost blood donations, the Redskins are teaming up with the American Red Cross, Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region (CG&P), to host blood donation drives throughout the entire 2010-2011 season.

The first Redskins blood drive will be done on Sept. 3, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Christian Fellowship Church at 21673 Beaumeade Circle, Ashburn, Va., while the second drive takes place at Damascus Lions Club, 10211 Lewis Drive, Damascus, Md.

Participants at these special event blood drives will receive a Redskins vs. Cowboys or Redskins vs. Texans game ticket courtesy of the American Red Cross. Participants may also receive free admission to other special events like music concerts and college football games held at FedExField.

“The American Red Cross has a longstanding relationship with the Redskins and we’re proud to see that grow to help our community even more,” said Gary J. Ouellette, CEO for the GC&P Region of the Red Cross, in a press statement. “With the Redskins support of our mission, we can now offer potential blood donors a special Redskins incentive and experience, which will help recruit blood donors during some of the more challenging times of year. This will help ensure that we continue to meet the needs of all local hospitals and patients.”

Appointments are required to participate in the blood drives and individuals must be 17 years of age, weighing at least 110 pounds (16 with parental permission).
