Town was named ‘Coolest Small Town in America’ by Budget Travel magazine
WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will participate in a walking tour today of Sykesville, which in June was named “Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel magazine. The Comptroller will visit several local businesses to talk with merchants and customers. Sykesville Mayor Ian Shaw, Town Manager Dawn Ashbacher and Economic Development Director Steven Colella will join Mr. Franchot at all stops.
The Comptroller will begin the tour at Warfield Commerce and Cultural Center, the former grounds of Springfield State Hospital. Mr. Franchot will visit Nexion Health, the first business to renovate one of three historic buildings and operate its headquarters on the 70-acre campus.
Afterward, the Comptroller will take a walking tour of Sykesville’s Main Street business district, which will include stops at Market Tavern, a gourmet market and wine bar,French Twist Café, a French-inspired coffee shop, and Farm and Home Service, a 68-year-old lawn and garden store.
This is the second time in three years that a Maryland town won the magazine’s “Coolest Small Town” contest, with Berlin winning the vote in 2014. Winners must have a population of fewer than 10,000 residents and offer a unique atmosphere, complete with shops, food, culture and history, as well as a good location, according to Budget Travel.
