Franchot to Speak at Four Eastern Shore Events
Stops include groundbreaking, financial symposium, school award and Ironman ceremony
WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will spend the day on the Eastern Shore, beginning by speaking at the groundbreaking of the new $49 million North Dorchester High School in Hurlock. The state is set to pay $29.4 million for the project. Mr. Franchot sits on the Board of Public Works, which approves public school construction funding.
The Comptroller will then be the keynote speaker at a CPA Financial Symposium luncheon at Salisbury University, hosted by Comprehensive Financial Solutions, a Salisbury-based financial advising firm. Mr. Franchot will speak about Marylandโs fiscal health and economic outlook, the 2016 tax filing season and will provide an update on taxpayer security initiatives.
The Comptroller will next present the 2016 Silver Hammer Award for Somerset County to Deale Island Elementary School. The school earned a 93 percent rating on its most recent state inspection, even though it was built in 1942 and faces environmental challenges.
Mr. Franchot will conclude the day by delivering remarks at the opening ceremony of the Ironman Maryland competition in Cambridge. The race begins on Saturday and includes a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River, a 112-mile bike race through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and a 26.2-mile run through downtown Cambridge and historic Long Wharf.
