WHAT:          Comptroller Franchot will present Maryland Masters Awards this morning to three artistically-talented Anne Arundel County Public School students. Joining the Comptroller will be Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and 1st Lady Yumi Hogan, an artist and longtime arts advocate.  The students include:  Ganon Cope, a third grader at Benfield Elementary School, Severna Park, for his collage of a still life of a bouquet of flowers; Beda Vining, an eighth grader at Severn River Middle School, Arnold, for a charcoal, graphite and ink pen sketch of a celestial portrait of a young girl; and Chavela Bell, a tenth grader at Glen Burnie High School, for a charcoal and chalk pastel self-portrait.

The award program recognizes young artists who have displayed extraordinary artistic skills and vision for Maryland’s future. The award program began last year to celebrate students’ achievements through the arts and to showcase the creative talents of students from kindergarten to 12th grade for two months in the Comptroller’s Office in Annapolis.

Later, Comptroller Franchot will speak at the Annapolis Black History Month event in the Assembly Room of the Louis L. Goldstein Treasury Building. The Black History Committee has continued the tradition of highlighting past and present accomplishments each year during the month of February.
