Cardin to Discuss Progressive Tax Reform with Southern Maryland Business and Community Leaders
TODAY, Monday, April 20 at 2:15 PM, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin will join business and community leaders from throughout Southern Maryland to discuss his innovative tax reform proposal, which centers on a progressive consumption tax. Senator Cardinโs proposal eliminates income tax for the vast majority of Americans and represents a comprehensive overhaul of Americaโs outdated system of taxation. It also would reduce the corporate income tax rate to one of the lowest among industrialized nations.
โItโs time for fresh thinking on tax reform, and my conversation with business and community leaders from Charles, Calvert and St. Maryโs counties will focus on finding ways to make our tax code simpler and fairer for families and employers. It should help make Maryland-based businesses more competitive and our nationโs economy stronger. And it should provide a way to responsibly and reliably collect reasonable revenues,โ said Senator Cardin. โOur current, 1980s-style tax code simply cannot accomplish these goals. In contrast, my Progressive Consumption Tax Act represents a viable way to simplify our approach to taxation, while ensuring that the countryโs revenue needs are met.โ
