It has been widely reported that Trump told Myeshia Johnson, the wife of slain soldier Sgt. La David Johnson, in essence, that her husband knew what he was getting into when he signed up for military service. Wilson, who was in the car with Myeshia Johnson on Oct. 17 to meet the body of her husband at Miami International Airport, was outraged at the presidentโs cavalier remark.
โI stand by my account of the call with @realDonaldTrump and was not the only one who heard and was dismayed by his insensitive remarks,โ the representative tweeted on Oct. 18.
Trump tweeted on Oct. 18 that Wilson fabricated the account of the incident and said it was โsad.โ
The issue of contacting the families of fallen members of the military came up at a White House news conference on Oct. 16, when Trump said that neither the Obama, George W. Bush or Clinton administrations made efforts to reach out to those grieving families. Staff members of the three prior presidents have disputed Trumpโs claims and former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder posted on Twitter a picture of him and Obama welcoming a soldier home.
Wilson told CNN that Myeshia Johnson said to her that the president didnโt know her husbandโs name. Wilson said that Trumpโs actions have been un-presidential.
โHe doesnโt even know how to sympathize with people,โ Wilson said according to an {Associated Press} article. โWeโre grieving. This is a grieving community.
โItโs disgraceful for him to even tweet about this. And as I say, this gentleman has a brain disorder and he needs to be checked out.โ
On Oct. 11, Wilson spoke movingly about the death of Johnson on the House floor.
โI was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of of Miami Garden,โ she said. โHe is one of four American soldiers killed in Niger in an ambush carried out by Boko Haram and other extremists linked to ISIS-West Africa. Sgt. Johnson was in Niger to provide training and assistance to Nigeriaโs military and Multinational Joint Task Force created to combat extremists in the region.โ
