Robert Leroy Barnes affectionately known as “Roy” departed this life on October 9, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 88. Roy was born November 27, 1924 in Mecklenburg County, Va. to Joshua and Beatrice Barnes. Roy was one of twelve children. His parents, two brothers Chester Barnes and John Malcolm Barnes, one sister, Ruth Brantley, two sons Jerome Barnes and Larry Darnell Barnes, and the love of his life, Gracie, preceded him in death.

Roy received his education through the Virginia Public School System. In 1957, Roy moved his family to Baltimore from Virginia to pursue a better career to provide for his family. Roy was employed with the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company from which he retired after 30 years of service.

In 1944, Roy met his soul mate and love of his life Gracie Augburn. It was love at first sight for the both of them. The following year they were married on December 29, 1945. Out of their union ten children were born, Grace Lee Singletary, Iris Christine Duckworth, James Garland Barnes, Jacqueline Marsilla Barnes, Daniel Abraham Barnes, Larry Darnell Barnes (deceased), Jerome Barnes (deceased), Kevin Barnes, Renee Denise Barnes and Lisa Lynn Barnes.

Family was most important to Roy. He was not just a good provider to his family; Roy left a great legacy to his children. To his sons, he left a legacy of how to treat the women you love. To his daughters, he left a legacy of what it looks like to be loved by a man. This legacy has been handed down from generation to generation. Roy along with his loving wife enjoyed going to cabarets and bull roasts. He loved the blues and one of his favorite singers was B.B. King. Playing “pitty-pat” was a family pastime. Roy’s family circle included his closest friends Romaine and Leroy Taylor, Edna Keys, Judy and James Taylor, Leola and Sam, Ethel and Walter DeMinds.

He leaves to cherish their memories: five brothers, Alvin, Milton, Morris, Norfleet and Marvin Barnes; 3 sisters, Geraldine Johnson, Susie Smith, Ronnie Walton; eight children, Grace (James Singletary, deceased), Chris (Evan Duckworth), Garland (Doris Barnes), Jackie (Charles Barrett), Danny (Yvette Barnes), Kevin, Renee (Ted McRae) and Lisa; 19 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
