Reigning National Basketball Association (NBA) MVP Derrick Rose scored 22 points, including the game-winning shot in the last 20 seconds, as the Chicago Bulls barely escaped with an 88-87 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas evening at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Both teams gave fans a game to remember for the holiday as the lead changed hands 12 times before the final score leaned in favor of Chicago (1-0 overall).

Already considered one of the best players in the league, Rose still showed improvement from last season as he appeared more confident in his three-point shooting in the season-opener against the Lakers. Rose’s career-shooting from the three-point line is only around 30 percent, but the guard was “hot” from the arc Sunday night, banking in four of six three-pointers to lead his Bulls to a victory. Chicago forward Luol Deng added 21 points and seven rebounds, while forward Carlos Boozer followed with 15 points and six rebounds in the win.

Veteran star forward Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists despite the loss; forward-center Pau Gasol followed with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Lakers (0-1 overall) will try to gain their first win of the season on Dec. 26 when they face the Sacramento Kings, while the Bulls will see more action the same date against the Golden State Warriors.
