The Pittsburgh Steelers traded star receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, according to ESPN.?The trade was made in anticipation of Holmes being suspended for four games next season after violating the NFL drug policy.
The fifth-year receiver also attracted negative attention to himself after being accused of throwing a glass at a woman in a lounge. No charges were filed against him, however, and his lawyer, Adam Swickle, told the AP that someone has come forth to take responsibility for committing that offense.
Holmes now adds to his history of off-the-field trouble, which includes a marijuana possession charge in 2008 and a domestic violence charge in 2006.
Despite his troubles, Holmes is still one of the better receivers in the NFL, recording 235 catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns in four seasons. He was named MVP of Super Bowl XLIII after making a game-winning catch that’s widely consider one of the greatest plays in NFL history.
