By any account, Alex Trebek has left some large shoes to fill.
The beloved, Emmy Award-winning game-show host, who presided over the fan-favorite “Jeopardy” for more than three decades, died Nov. 8 after battling with pancreatic cancer. He was 80.
While it would be difficult to replace Trebek’s charm and erudite air of command, some fans believe they have a candidate that may fit the bill.
A petition on Change.org is calling for LeVar Burton to take on Trebek’s fallen mantle.
Burton is best known for hosting the PBS’ “Reading Rainbow,” his stint on the “Star Trek” franchise and his pivotal role on the seminal “Roots” miniseries.
At the time of this posting, the petition had garnered 71,130 signatures.
“Between hosting 21 seasons of the educational Reading Rainbow, playing the brainiac engineer Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: the Next Generation, and filling the roll of Kunta Kinte in the ever important mini-series Roots, LeVar Burton has inspired and shaped the minds of several generations of trivia-loving nerds,” the petition states. “This petition is to show Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and producer Harry Friedman just how much love the public has for Burton, and how much we’d all love to see him as the next host of Jeopardy!”
A signee named Aurelia Womack wrote of her reasons for signing the petition: “For my entire life LeVar Burton has been a beacon of wisdom, literacy, and humanity. I can think of no better successor to the late Alex Trebek.”
Another, Randy Pierre of Brampton, Canada, stated succinctly: “Because he was born to do that show.”
Burton highlighted the petition on his Twitter page and shouted out his fans for the endorsement.
“Even if nothing comes from it, I can’t tell how much how I appreciate all y’alls love and support!” he tweeted.
