Howard University’s women’s softball was rewarded for their stellar performances in the Cherry Blossom Classic last weekend as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honored several players on March 21.
Lady Bison freshman outfielder Ashley Turner was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after helping Howard win three out of five games last week. Turner recorded a percentage of .333 hits from the field in a 5-3 win over Monmouth, while also adding a run-batted-in (RBI) and two runs scored in 13 at-bats throughout the entire week.
Other Lady Bison recognized by the MEAC this week include junior shortstop Rebecca Kirshner and senior pitcher Carly Martin. Kirshner, a Gaithersburg, Md., native, knocked out her first home run of the season in the 5-3 win against Monmouth. She recorded nine of Howard’s 49 hits throughout the week. Four of those hits came in an impressive performance against Albany (N.Y.) as she batted two doubles in consecutive innings. Martin, a Hanover, Md. Native, was honored because she pitched a perfect 0.00 earned run average (ERA), striking out multiple batters in a 6-0 victory over George Mason, helping mark Howard’s first shutout of the season.
Howard will see its next action on March 30 against local rival Bowie State University.
