Homer Eli Favor never held back in his righteous fight for justice. He brought his own passion and mixed it with that of his compadres in Baltimore including those known as the Goon Squad.
And those who preceded him in death were a part of the tribute to his life, June 20, at Union Baptist Church, being designated honorary pallbearers in addition to those on the premises, Oliver Patrick Scott and Lalit Gadhia.
Favor’s unusual gestures toward the greater community garnered for him so many kind words that many were printed on the program. Dorothy Bascom, wife of the late Dr. Marion Bascom, recalled the spirited discussions between the two longtime friends in the Bascom home.
“He documented his positions with data from his academic background and his varied experiences,” according to her statement. “He did not apologize for challenging the status quo.”
Former student Avon Bellamy recalled the Morgan State University professor as a “man driven by a strong faith in God. He was a fearless fighter for the underdog, a great motivator and a great human being.”
One attendee recalled times as a guest on the television show Dr. Favor and the late Rev. Vernon Dobson hosted, “Look at it This Way.”
“Dr. Favor was a champion against injustices everywhere in the world, including South Africa,” said the Rev. Dr. Mankekolo Mahlangu-Ngcobo, servant leader of Life Restoration Ministry.
“His intellectual questioning gave me the opportunity to explain the atrocity of apartheid from my own experience.”
She said Dr. Favor was a “great international, intellectual activist.”
