Two Northwest, D.C. residents died after being beaten in two separate assault incidents several months ago. Each death was ruled a homicide after the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reported the cause of both deaths was blunt force trauma, police reported.

One beating took place in the 300 block of Delafield Place, NW on Sept. 19, 2015. Medina Michelle Thornton, 43, was found unconscious suffering from blunt force trauma to the head in an apartment off New Hampshire Avenue in Brightwood Park. According to a search warrant obtained by the Washington Post, police said they responded to a call from a neighbor who lived on the second-floor in a unit adjacent to Thorton.

The neighbor heard loud noises and then heard footsteps going downstairs and a door slamming open against the brick building. The neighbor told police he went out into the hallway and found Thorton lying on the floor near her front door. Police recovered a pipe wrench, and photographs, along with other evidence, the search warrant said.

According to police, she died from her injuries on April 3. On April 4, an autopsy revealed she died from complications of blunt force trauma to the head. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined her death was a homicide. “The investigation is on-going,” Sean Hickman, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department told the AFRO April 8.

Hickman said the department will give an update as soon as they have new information.

Another violent assault occurred on Jan.5 in the 1300 block of Nicholson Street, NW. Police said they found Sheldon Scott Gordy, 55, unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from blunt force trauma. On Mar.31, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of Gordy’s death to be blunt force trauma with compression to the neck. His death was ruled a homicide.

Police are offering a reward for information regarding the case.
