As fireworks lit up the sky over the nation’s capital on Independence Day, D.C. police combed two neighborhoods in Northwest Washington investigating shootings that left two people dead and six injured.

The first incident occurred just after 8 p.m. in the 5000 block of First Street, NW. Police who responded to a call for shots fired found several people suffering from gunshot wounds. Crevontai Key, 19, of Northeast Washington, was found dead at the scene. Three other men were shot in the same attack, police said. Two were taken to local hospitals where they were admitted in critical condition. The third injured man was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released, police said.

Four hours later, police were called to the 600 block of Morton Street NW where they found Julius Barnett Ellington, 35, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital where he later died. A second man who was shot in the same attack was admitted in stable condition, police said.
