The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds earned their seventh straight victory with a 72-60 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Dec. 10 in Sparkill, N.Y. UDC now advances to 9-1 overall on the season, 2-0 in the East Coast Conference (ECC).

It didn’t take long for UDC to take control of the game; they led 37-20 at halftime, and extended their lead to 56-28 just five minutes into the second half.

St. Thomas made a run in the second half, but it only helped them keep the score from looking too lopsided in the Firebirds’ favor.

The Firebirds were led by three seniors scoring in double figures. Senior guard Brandon Herbert of Baltimore, Md. led the game with 21 points and five rebounds, while shooting 41 percent from the field and 44 percent from three point range. He was complemented by senior guard Dishawn Bradshaw, another Baltimore native, who scored 19 points to go with four rebounds and four assists.

Washington, D.C. native Nigel Munson added 14 points, five rebounds, and six assists. UDC sophomore forward Ziad Ashmawy, a Cairo, Egypt native, nearly scored a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocked shots.

UDC will now take a long 20-day layoff as they focus on final exams before the school winter break. The Firebirds’ next action comes five days after Christmas on Dec. 30 in a home contest against Dominican College.
