CAMBRIDGE, Md. (AP) — A project that will be the centerpiece of an effort to honor Harriet Tubman is getting federal funding.
Gov. Martin O’Malley is expected to announce $8.5 million for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center in Cambridge on Tuesday. The center is meant to tie together a state park, scenic byway and a national historical park honoring the Underground Railroad conductor.
Tubman, who led hundreds of slaves to freedom during the Civil War, was born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
