The U.S. National women’s basketball team advanced to their fifth straight Olympic gold medal finals game after defeating Australia, 86-73, in a semifinal game Aug. 9 during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

The U.S. survived a scare as Australia fought the Americans hard throughout the first three quarters. Australia led 47-43 at halftime, and the score remained tight through the entire third quarter. Australia’s center Liz Cambage dominated the Americans on the inside, scoring 19 points in the paint with seven rebounds.

But U.S. center Tina Charles took on the challenge of stopping Cambage in the second half as the Americans mounted a comeback. Charles finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the U.S. pulled away in the fourth quarter.

“I knew I could stop ,” Charles said, who was followed by teammate Sue Bird with 13 points. Forward Diana Tarausi matched Charles with 14 points.

The Americans will compete for their fifth straight Olympic gold medal Aug. 11.
