Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen announced that Walt Whitman High School student Brian Fisher is the Eighth District winner of the 2016 Congressional App Challenge. Brian’s mobile app was designed so that students could have easier access to The Black and White Newspaper, their school’s student-run publication.

“Brian’s impressive app is a great example of using technology to facilitate the quick communication of important information – a useful concept at Walt Whitman High School and many other communities,” said Congressman Van Hollen. “I congratulate Brian on his win, and hope every participant in this year’s competition will continue to challenge themselves and pursue their interest in technology.”

This competition is designed to engage student creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields. Established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this competition is part of a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. It is designed to promote innovation and engagement in STEM education fields.
Apps are judged based on the following criteria: quality of the idea, including creativity and originality; implementation of the idea, including user experience and design; and demonstrated excellence of coding and programming skills.
