Van Hollen Statement on Pay Parity for Federal Workers
Washington, DC – Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement after the Obama Administration announced that all federal employees will receive a 2.1% pay increase in 2017, which establishes parity with military personnel:
“Earlier this week, I wrote to President Obama to urge him to ensure civilian-military pay parity and provide a pay increase for all federal employees next year. Civilian federal employees in Maryland and across the country guard our homeland, develop new cures and treatments for disease, and oversee grants for education, community development, and infrastructure. Their pay should keep pace with the increase included in the National Defense Authorization Act for military personnel, and I applaud the President’s announcement that the federal government will make sure that parity exists for 2017.
“In recent years, the federal workforce has contributed to deficit reduction with a three-year pay freeze. As our economy has improved, the President rightly concluded that an increase this year would help attract and retain the top-quality workforce necessary to serve American families. A strong federal workforce, and a pay structure that recognizes the contributions of our civilian and military personnel, makes America stronger and delivers better value to the taxpayers.”
