The D.C. Council Committee of the Whole has scheduled a public hearing next week for the Hilda H.M. Mason Way Designation Act of 2012 (Bill 19-0695), which would symbolically name the 1400 block of Roxanna Road N.W. in honor of the late council member.
The public hearing is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in Room 123 of the John A. Wilson Building.
Those wishing to testify at the hearing should contact Priscilla McIver, administrative assistant to the Committee of the Whole, at (202) 724-8196, or via e-mail at email@example.com and furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business on Wednesday, March 21.
Witnesses should either bring 20 copies of their written testimony or submit one copy to the committee by March 21, 2012. Testimony is limited to 3 minutes per person.
Mason (Statehood Party) served on the council from 1977 to 1998 and was a legend in city politics, winning reelection four times to an at-large seat.
Prior to the council, Mason served on the Board of Education from 1972 to 1977 when she was appointed to the council to fill the unexpired term of the late Julius Hobson Sr.
Later that year, she defeated nine other candidates to win an at-large seat in her own right.
Mason died in 2007 at age 91. She had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
