Perhaps no team in the National Football League (NFL) is as storied as Washington, D.C.’s own Washington Redskins. So the team will celebrate 80 years of tenure in the NFL this upcoming season with Nike throwback jerseys and a season-long campaign titled “Hail to our Fans.”

“It is an honor to celebrate the Redskins’ rich history, talented alumni and strong traditions in our 80th anniversary campaign,” team president Daniel Snyder said in a press release. “We are excited to have our loyal fans participate in the ‘10 For 80’ honor and all of our 80th anniversary festivities.”

Snyder’s “10 For 80” reference is the label of a campaign in which fans will choose the ten players to be added to the list of 70 greatest players in the team’s 80 years.

The Redskins are expected to wear their throwback uniforms at two home games this upcoming season. The jerseys will reflect a modern interpretation of Washington’s 1937 uniforms, the same season that saw the team move from Boston to D.C. and claim their first championship. The design has also been crafted to pay homage to Hall of Fame quarterback “Slingin” Sammy Baugh who directed Washington to their first title in his inaugural season as a rookie.

“The Redskins are an amazing organization focused on team, unity and tradition.

This new alternate uniform design for the Redskins is a very special one that truly speaks to the team’s long, rich history,” said Nike Football Creative Director Todd Van Horne in a press release. “We have truly enjoyed working with Dan Snyder and his team on this project and look forward to seeing the new Elite 51 uniform system on the field this season.”

Nike has infused the uniform with its patented Elite 51 system which incorporates lightweight padding and increased sleeve articulation for better range of motion and a new four-way stretch fabrication to provide a streamlined shrink-wrap fit.

The jerseys are just a small piece of the historic campaign that will include a series of celebration events leading up to Washington’s home game on Nov. 4 against Carolina. Among the planned celebratory events will be the 51st Annual Redskins Welcome Home Luncheon where fans will have an opportunity to mingle with the entire team, coaches and alumni. On Nov. 3, a Redskins Alumni Day of Giving will showcase members from the team and front office who have provided for the less fortunate, and on Nov. 4 an 80th Anniversary Gala will be held to celebrate Redskins alumni.
