The Morgan State Bears showed they can put on a beat down on opponents in a 20-3 win over Howard on September 25. But they proved they can also take a beat down, losing badly to the Bethune Cookman Wildcats, 69-32, on Oct. 2.
The loss marked the most points given up by Morgan State since a 65-15 loss to South Carolina State in 2005. It’s also the most points surrendered at their Hughes Stadium home field since Maine scored 77 points in 2003.
“There wasn’t an effort on either side of the ball,” said MSU coach Donald Hill-Eley. “You can’t play well when you’re turning the ball over eight times. You can’t beat a team like that.” ?
Morgan committed eight turnovers in the game, including four interceptions and four fumbles. MSU quarterback Donovan Dickerson completed only eight of 25 passes for 74 yards, including three interceptions. One of his passes was picked off and returned for a touchdown.?
“At this point we’re making some crazy decisions and we just need to get back and make some corrections and watch film,” Hill-Eley said.?
While Morgan State was limited to less than 250 total offensive yards, Bethune Cookman gained more than 360 yards on the ground alone as Androse Bell rushed for two touchdowns and Matt Johnson completed 13 of 18 passes for 261 passing yards.
In the end, it was just too much offense for Morgan to keep up with.?
“We only have five seniors on the team, one on the offensive side of the ball, and it’s our youth that caught up with us,” Hill-Eley said. “We just have to start moving some people around and see what happens.”
Morgan State will see their next action on Oct. 9 when they take on the North Carolina A&T Aggies in Greensboro, N.C.
