Omar Anthony Smith, 22, of the 7100 block of Marbury Court in District Heights, has been arrested in the slaying of a District Heights man on Dec. 28.

According to police, Lyndell Lorenzo Sowells, 32, of the 7000 block of Marbury Court in District Heights was shot multiple times just before 9:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of District Heights Parkway. Patrol officers who responded to calls reporting shots fired found Sowells gravely injured. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim was able to provide a description of the suspect who shot him and the direction where he had run. The information was broadcast and a short time later, a patrol officer saw a man matching Sowellsโ€™ description running along a fence behind some homes in the area.

The officer was able to stop and arrest the suspect, later identified as Omar Smith. The officer then retraced Smithโ€™s path and found a black handgun in a fence. Smith allegedly admitted to police that he shot Sowells, according to the police departmentโ€™s blog.

โ€œThe preliminary investigation reveals the shooting was drug-related,โ€ the blog said.

Smith is charged with first degree murder and is held in the Prince Georgeโ€™s County jail in Upper Marlboro.
