Why Should the Baltimore Police Cooperate with Reform Recommendations?

The AFRO asked Ben Jealous, a civil rights activists who, along with the Center for American Progress, released a report called “Toward Trust: Grassroots Recommendations for Police Reform in Baltimore,” why he thought the Baltimore Police Department would cooperate with his report’s recommendations.

Jealous encouraged Baltimore’s citizens to remain hopeful in rebuilding a trustworthy relationship with police officers. He also pushed for a reform of the Baltimore officers’ Bill of Rights.

Will Proposed Police Reform Method Work?

The AFRO asked Ben Jealous, a civil rights activists who, along with the Center for American Progress, released a report called “Toward Trust: Grassroots Recommendations for Police Reform in Baltimore,” if he thought that his methods for reforming the Baltimore Police Department would be more effective than methods used in the past.

Jealous said that victims of police brutality should be allowed to speak about what the experiences they encountered instead of being issued gag orders.

He also said that corrupt police officers should be revealed so that other officers will not be seen as also being corrupt.

Has Baltimore City Ineffectively Approached Dealing with it’s Problems?

The AFRO asked Ben Jealous, a civil rights activists who, along with the Center for American Progress, released a report called “Toward Trust: Grassroots Recommendations for Police Reform in Baltimore,” if he thought that Baltimore City had been dealing with small parts of the problems in the city instead of the larger issue.

Jealous said that he wanted everyone to feel safe and he thought that could happen if there was trust between the police department and citizens.

He also said he hoped for a time when only dangerous people were in jail, not the homeless or drug addicted.

Will the Impact of this Report Be Diminished by Your Possible Candidacy for Balto. Mayor?

The AFRO asked Ben Jealous if he believed that his rumored run for mayor will politicize his report which includes recommendations for improving the Baltimore Police Department.

Jealous denied making a decision to run for mayor.

He said citizens should not be distracted by rumors, but focused on the facts presented in his report.
