The AFRO as long been in the business of shining the spotlight on those who make positive contributions yet go unrecognized, so the sports desk decided to extend that service to our NFL fans. Each week we will honor a player whose performance went unnoticed by most observers. Here are the AFRO’s first ever Unsung Heroes of the Week, an honoree selected from the local favorite Washington Redskins and another selected from the entire NFL field. Enjoy.

AFRO’s Unsung Redskin of the Week: Trent Williams – Offensive Tackle

No doubt, the most outstanding stars of Sunday night’s NFL season opening thriller were Washington Redskins’ DeAngelo Hall and LaRon Landry. Both defensive players helped limit the Dallas Cowboys’ explosive passing attack to only 277 yards and one touchdown, while also putting on a “how to make a tackle” clinic. Landry led Washington with an amazing 17 tackles (13 solo), while Hall finished with seven tackles and a huge forced fumble that he picked up and ran back for a 32-yard defensive touchdown.

But both Landry and Hall are high-profiled players that have already been recognized by the media on several occasions for their skillful contributions. The one player who kicked butt all game while passing the glory to his teammates was rookie tackle Trent Williams. The first round draft pick out of Oklahoma University had the responsibilities of blocking DeMarcus Ware, easily the best pass rusher in the game, and Williams handled the job beautifully. Taking on a star like Ware in your first action ever in the NFL can be a scary scenario for a rookie, but Williams passed the test with flying colors. He gave up one sack to Ware, but that’s not bad at all considering Ware’s ability to record several sacks in a single game.

“He got me a couple plays,” Williams told reporters about DeMarcus Ware after the game. “Overall, I think I pretty much held my own . I think I was about two or three plays off from nearly a perfect game, so back to the drawing board.”

Williams may be an Unsung Hero for this week, but with his incredible talent, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be one of the biggest stars on the team.
