The White House has halted plans to place Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, reversing a redesign first announced in 2016 that would have made her the first Black American and first woman in more than a century to appear on U.S. paper currency. The decision has drawn criticism from lawmakers and civil rights advocates, particularly as supporters of the 47th president promote a proposal to feature him on a new $250 bill.
