(Updated 6/1/2013) The faith community of Baltimore was saddened, May 30, to hear of the death of the Rev. Harold A. Carter Sr., pastor of New Shiloh Baptist Church for 48 years.
His leadership has helped craft the ministry of more than 100 sons and daughters in ministry and mentored the discipleship of generations of New Shiloh members and the thousands in the national congregation who heard his booming voice sounding the trumpet on radio and television.
“During his decades of service, Dr. Harold A. Carter Sr., has earned our nation’s praise for a lasting legacy of principle and faith,” Rep. Elijah Cummings said in a 2010 editorial. “His is a vision that all Americans would do well to heed.
Dr. Carter has led evangelistic ministries across America and many foreign countries. On numerous occasions, he has preached men’s rallies for the Promise Keepers Ministries.
Dr. Carter’s first book, The Prayer Tradition of Black People, continues to be a standard work in the Black Spiritual Anthology. A more recent work, Building Disciples in the Local Church, is used widely by ministries seeking Christian renewal.
Rev. Carter often told all who would listen, “I want people to know this is a ministry that loves Jesus.”
Dr. Carter represents the best there is of preachment, according to his friend of 55 years, the Rev. Dr. A.C.D. Vaughn, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church.
“He exemplified what good preaching is all about and we enjoyed a great friendship,” Rev. Vaughn said, adding that he is godfather to Rev. Carter’s children and Rev. Carter is godfather to Vaughn’s son.
“My heart is saddened, but he’s at home now and I give God the glory,” Rev. Vaughn said.
Rev. Carter was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Nathan Carter, world renowned music educator and choir director; and his wife, Dr. Weptanomah Carter, author, teacher and spiritual mentor.
His children are the Rev. Dr. Harold A. Carter Jr., co-pastor of New Shiloh and Dr. Weptanomah Carter Davis.

Rev. Carter will lie in state at New Shiloh Baptist Church, noon to 6 p.m., June 6, with family viewing and Choral Praise from 6-7 p.m., followed by a church wide memorial celebration at 7 p.m.
The Victorious Home Going Celebration will be held 11 a.m. June 7.
