Acclaimed Grammy-winning bassist, composer and bandleader, Ben Williams, will be headlining a worldwide tour ahead of his album entitled I Am A Man to be released on Feb. 7, 2020. Regardless of his success, the Washington, D.C. native will be home for the holidays for his annual Hometown Holiday Musical Extravaganza at The Hamilton Live in the District on Dec. 26.

The album I AM A MAN boasts hip hop grooves and cinematic synths to afrobeat-tinged R&B and haunting soul. Williams said he “wanted this record to deal with the past, present, and future.” (Courtesy Photo)

Williams graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts before attending Michigan State University and The Juilliard School, where he won first place at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2009. Williams also took home a Grammy Award, as a member of guitarist Pat Metheny’s band, for Best Jazz Instrumental Album in 2013.

I AM A MAN’s title references Memphis’ historic 1968 sanitation workers’ strike, in which I Am A Man” in an arresting, boldface type. “The image of this long line of men, holding the picket signs, all saying the same thing – there’s something powerful about seeing this message over and over again,” Williams explains, before saying that the messaging reminded him of how we use hashtags today to help ignite activism such as Black Lives Matter and MeToo movements.
