Freshman quarterback Caylin Newton scored the game-winning touchdown for the Howard University Bison in the final seconds of a 28-24 comeback victory over the Norfolk State University Spartans on Nov. 11 in Washington, D.C.

The victory marked the fifth straight win for Howard, who advanced to a 7-3 overall record and 6-1 against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), currently good for second place in the MEAC standings.

Howard was down, 24-14, in the fourth quarter before freshman defensive back Bryan Cook intercepted a pass to give the Bison the football. Newton then led Howard on a 90-yard drive capped off with a touchdown run by senior running back Anthony Philyaw.

Howard then forced another stop of Norfolk State’s offense, setting up another 90-yard scoring drive, this time ending with Newton’s game-deciding touchdown.

Newton totaled 205 yards on offense and Philyaw led the team with 193 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Howard now trails only undefeated North Carolina A&T (10-0 overall, 7-0 MEAC) for first place in the conference. The Bison will take on the Hampton University Pirates (5-5 overall, 4-3 MEAC) in the regular season finale on Nov. 18 in Hampton, Va.
