Backstage @ Center Stage, the theater’s annual free family-friendly open house, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 27.

CenterStage1

A celebrated program organized by Center Stage’s Education and Community Programming Department, Backstage @ Center Stage gives the public an interactive look behind the scenes of the Calvert Street theater’s six-story space.

Visitors will be able to sign up for workshops, including stage combat with a certified fight teacher and  stage makeup with Towson University’s Jokesters comedy and makeup professionals, as well as a junior composition workshop with Peabody Composition Professor Judah Adashi. Demonstrations by the light-and-sound department, the scene shop, and the props shop will be offered, also.

Opportunities to get up close with professional actors include watching a rehearsal for Center Stage’s upcoming rock musical and winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Next to Normal and a 12:45 p.m. panel discussion with the cast of Amadeus, Center Stage’s current production.

Magician David London and hula hoop group Baltimore Hoop Love will offer entertainment in addition to theatrical performances by area theater groups such as Cohesion Theatre Company, Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, EMP Collective, Annext Theater and Vagabond Players.  Other interactive activities include having a personalized 1-minute play written on the spot by a professional playwright, a costume photo booth, and face painting.
