WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) will host her 14th Annual Job Fair Aug. 9, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center – Hall C, 801 Mt. Vernon Avenue NW, for District residents only with jobs-tips workshops from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Recruiters representing more than 100 employers with confirmed job openings from across the region and from both the public and private sector will be in attendance. Among the great variety of employers are AFLAC, Subway, Washington Hospital Center, Foot Locker, National Public Radio, Prince George’s County, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. “The nation has averted default, but widespread unemployment persists in D.C.,” said Norton. “House Republicans have yet to produce a bill that will create jobs, but D.C. residents will find at our job fair that jobs are available not only in D.C., but also in all the neighboring jurisdictions, including a rich variety in the private sector as well as in local, state, and federal government agencies. Our job fair offers a rare opportunity to shop for jobs in one location, to interview with recruiters across a variety of industries, and like last year, to perhaps receive a job offer on the spot.”
A particularly useful feature of Tuesday’s job fair will be workshops on résumé writing, interviewing skills, and the revised federal employment application, along with a “Dress for Success” fashion show to help job seekers learn what to wear in the workplace. The workshops and fashion show will run from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.
The Department of Employment Services (DOES) will have a mobile van onsite equipped with computers and internet access to provide assistance with resumes and cover letters. DOES will also provide three 15-minute workshops titled “Tips and Tricks to Job Searching in the New Age.”
Participants are asked to wear professional attire, to bring copies of their résumés, and to bring proof of D.C. residency (D.C. photo ID, utility bill, or the like). A complete list of participating companies and agencies will be provided onsite.
