The Frederick Douglass High School Alumni Association is having a dinner and dance celebrating the school’s 130th anniversary. Founded in 1883 as the Colored High and Training School, Douglass is the second oldest historically integrated public high school in the U.S. It was the only high school for African-Americans in the city of Baltimore until Paul Laurence Dunbar High School opened its doors in 1937. The 130th anniversary dinner and dance will be held at The Forum, 4210 Primrose Avenue, on June 7, from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Tickets include a full-course buffet, open bar, live entertainment by The Slagz Band and special guest, Rosa “Rambling Rose” Pryor doing a book-signing of her new book {African-American Community, History & Entertainment in Maryland}. Sojourner-Douglass College’s Owings Mills campus is hosting “Evening with the Arts; Jazz ‘N’ Jeans Nite,” featuring Carl Grubbs & Company with Inetta McNeill, and yours truly, will be there with my new book on May 31, 7-9:30 p.m. The event will take place at Sojourner Douglass College, 10711 Red Run Blvd., Suites 119-121 in Owings Mills, Md. Me either! I typed all this gibberish, but have no idea what it means. I am sure that some of my readers know exactly what it means. I just can’t imagine walking around shopping listening to the radio on my cell phone. Technology is moving just a little too fast for this old lady.
The Enlisted Association Chapter #9 is hosting a Black & White Ball on June 2 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Diamondz Event Center, 9980 Liberty Road, in the Marriottsville Shopping Center. The Royal Theater & Community Heritage Corporation invites you to their “Courtyard Summer Music Series”, a fundraising campaign to rebuild The Royal with a taste of Sandtown at the Avenue Bakery, 2229 Pennsylvania Ave., featuring “Sandtown Simply Black & Baltimore’s Contemporary Gospel Group”, “Serenity” on June 1, 2-6 p.m. This is going to happen at the bakery with the summer music series free to everyone, all summer long every Saturday featuring performances by Baltimore’s best musicians and singers. James Hamlin, owner and head baker of The Avenue Bakery, says, “Together, we can rebuild the Royal, and reconnect the circuit by making it a community effort, as it was originally. The history and legacy is ours, together we can show the world the greatness of our community and honor those that created it”.
