Hampton’s Shine Huwe hit a double off the left field wall in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the host Lady Pirates a 2-1 extra inning victory over Morgan State on March 25 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex in Hampton, Va.

The victory helped Hampton win the three-game weekend series, two games to one over Morgan State. With the win, Hampton (13-18 overall, 2-1 MEAC) matched last season’s win total and recorded its ninth win in its last 15 games.

Morgan State dropped to 5-13 overall on the season and 1-2 in the MEAC.

The game was a pitchers’ duel through six innings, until the Lady Bears’ sophomore Shareday Christina hit a RBI single to right field in the seventh inning, scoring senior Boshia Richardson, who led off the inning with a double.

The host Lady Pirates evened the score in the bottom half of the inning with Carla Trimble scored on a RBI single up the middle by Nina Ferguson.

The score remained tied at 1-1, until the 10th when Bianca Vallejo was placed on second base to start the inning due to the international tiebreaker rules going into effect in the inning.

Vallejo advanced to third on a passed ball and Sharde Estep walked. Huwe followed with her game winning double to left field for the win.

Morgan State returns to action next Sunday, April 1, when it hosts Bowie State in a non-conference doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field in Baltimore, Md. The contest will mark the home opener for the Lady Bears. First pitch is slated for noon.
