The Howard University women’s and men’s track and field teams used their latest competition to tune up for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship meet scheduled for Feb. 16.

After competing in the Vince Brown Invitational Track Meet held at Christopher Newport University on Feb. 4, the Bison were able to produce two additional qualifiers for the upcoming conference meet.

Sophomore Aaron Harrison qualified after winning the 16- minute barrier in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:44 at the Vince Brown Invitational. On the womenโ€™s side, senior Jami Hardy qualified for the MEAC Championship after winning the 800-meter (2:15), despite competing in her first indoor meet of the season.

According to Howard Sports Information, Brianna Jones also strengthened her seeding in the MEAC Championships by improving her status in the long jump with a winning distance of 18’9″(her previous best was 18’1″) while freshman sensation Giovanni Mowatt took his second qualifying event of the 800 meters in 1:55. Mowatt had already qualified in the mile run.

Wallace Spencer also performed well at the Feb. 4 event, finishing second in the 60-meter hurdle race (8:14). He had already qualified for the hurdles event.

According to Howard Sports Information, the womenโ€™s relay team looks to be a favorite in the MEAC Championship meet.

They had two separate relay teams perform strong in the Vince Brown Invitational 4ร—400-meter relay as both teams placed first (4:00) and second (4:06). Doriean Broady, Zahra, Danielle Douglas and Jami while made up the first place team while the team finished second included Symone Glover, Kaleisha Taylor, Abigail Reid and Kinyatta Cooper.

Howard has one more meet to qualify additional athletes for the MEACs; they compete in the prestigious NYC Milrose Games on Feb. 11.
